Waterfalls and Such
It still blows my mind how something so old can still be so dynamic, even if it is for all the wrong reasons sometimes. Havasu creek has to be the single most beautiful location on the planet; the natural beauty of it has no equal. Yet even down in the middle of the grand canyon, far removed from any sort of urban area, it is impossible to get away from the effects of humans. A natural flash flood back in August of 2008 caused the failure of an unstable earth-dam near the local town of Supai, resulting in a catastrophic flood that caused significant damage to the waterfalls, severely altered the watercourse and put many lives in danger. The damage is permanent, definitely not a natural one, yet all the same it still occurred. Havasu falls is shorter and less spectacular. Navajo falls is completely gone. The creek has also formed two new incredible waterfalls, both of which are very nice. Now over two years since my last visit, I find myself by the clear blue waters of Havasu Creek, with no tourists to be seen anywhere, the campground deserted. Exaclty like it should be this time of the year. Just a good friend and a very special place. I could not think of any better way to start off the decade. If I happen to live through it, should be one for the record books…
Thank you to miss Angie for being one of my better friends. You never seem to get enough of this stuff, following me to so many random corners of the southwest when you know I am completely crazy. I have put you through hell, pushed you off huge cliffs, and forced you to swim through some of the coldest and dirtiest water that the state of Arizona has to offer. You are one of the toughest, graceless, sweetest and beautiful girl I think I have met. Until next time…
Eric
